Wike Bags UN Mayor Of Peace Award
Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been conferred with Mayor of Peace Award by United Nations (UN) Polac Peace Programme of Nigeria.
Director General of the organsation, Lion (Dr) Halo Eton, said that the award was in recognition of Governor Wike’s outstanding performances in peace building both in Rivers State and the entire Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State government has restated its commitment towards sustaining the prevailing peaceful environment across the state.
The Deputy Governor, Dr (Mrs) Ipalibo Harry Banigo, who represented Governor Wike at the award ceremony, also described the state amnesty programme as very successful.
Dr Banigo said that over 2000 cultists surrendered their weapons to the amnesty programme while the state boundary commission has tackled a number of boundary cases, thereby restoring peace to many communities in the state.
Similarly, the new Country President of UN-polac, Dr (Mrs) Priscilla S.C Bassey, has pledged more campaigns for peaceful co-existence in Nigeria.
Dr (Mrs) Bassey, who said this shortly after her investiture in Port Harcourt, said that in line with the mandate of the organization communities in the country would be educated in the need for peaceful co-existence.
Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Hajia Raheemat Omoro Momodu urged the Federal Government to take proactive steps towards checking the rising cases of violence in the country.
Hajia Momodu also described the killings by Fulani herdsmen as worse than Boko Haram.
