Senate Confirms 15 RECs …12 Others Yet To Scale Through Screening

The Senate, yesterday, confirmed the nomination of 15 out of the 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission submitted by the Presidency to the Red Chambers.
The confirmation followed the adoption of the report by the Senate Committee on INEC at plenary.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the committee, Senator Suleiman Nazif, told the senators that all the nominees were cleared by the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).
Nazif also noted that the remaining nominees were still under screening by the panel .
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, commended the committee on the work well done, and urged the confirmed nominees to work assiduously to impact on our democracy by improving the electoral process.
It would be recalled that President Muhammadu  Buhari, two weeks ago  had written to the Senate, requesting for the screening and subsequent confirmation of  the 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners.
In another development, the Senate also received the  report of the Joint Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity and Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy  in respect of a motion on the hike in electricity tariff by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing; Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
