Rivers Child Rights Law, Dormant – Lawyer
A human rights advocate, Mr Josiah Ebenezer, has described the extant Child Rights Law of Rivers State as largely neglected.
Mr Ebenezar, who is also a legal practitioner stated this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
He expressed regret that the Child Rights Law of the state has remained dormant as children of school age are still found on the streets of Port Harcourt hawking wares or doing other menial jobs during school hours.
He noted that any law that would not be implemented or executed ought not to have been made.
Mr Ebenezer applauded the domestication of the Child Rights Act by the state government but urged the executive to do more.
He said children remained future leaders of the society hence they must be equipped to steer the future to the right direction.
The human rights advocate also expressed surprise that despite the fact that education in the state is free, some parents are unwilling to send their children and wards to school.
