NUJ Lauds RSG Over Awards To Akwu, Oba
The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed appreciation to the Rivers State Government, organisers of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, and the Honours/Awards Sub-Committee for the awards of Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State (DSSRS) to a former National President and a patron of the union, respectively.
In a statement signed by the state Chairman of NUJ, Omoni Ayo-Tamuno, and Secretary, Soibi Max-Alalibo, last Wednesday, the union recalled that late Ndagene Akwu, who grew through the ranks in the union as chairman of the Rivers State Television Chapel, chairman of the state Council, vice president, Zone F (South-South), before becoming president of the union, stressing that the recipient was the first from the state to rise to the highest position in NUJ in the country.
“We also appreciate the same award given to our indefatigable Patron, His Eminence, Chukumela Nnam Obi II, Oba (Eze-Ogba), Oba of Ogbaland, whose magnanimity and contributions to the development of the state in various capacities are unquantifiable,” the union explained.
“As a body, we believe that the awards go a long way to appreciate not just the contributions of our respected late colleague and leader, and patron, but also states in clear terms that hard work, indeed, pays,” the NUJ added.
According to the union, “This will, to a large extent, instil in future generations, the spirit of hard work, which our society needs to enhance the level of development Nigeria needs to compete favourably in the comity of nations,”.
