‘Appraise Candidates Before Voting Them’

An advocacy organisation, Good Governance to Good Governance has advised political parties and Rivers people to always appraise the past records of  aspirants seeking elective offices before giving them their mandate.
One of the group executive, Ejike Echomgde who stated this in an interview said most of the work is on the political parties, explaining that it is wise for the political parties to choose amongst them credible candidates before elections.
Echomgde further explained that, it is important that the parties check the track records of their aspirants which will enable the electorate to look at where aspirants are coming from,  to ascertain if they have a good standing in the society.
He warned the people not to be carried away by rhetoric and tribal sentiments in  future elections, insisting that it is a new dawn requiring a radical departure from the past where anyone would just be presented  for elective office.
According to him,’’ there must be something to see in the antecedents of office seekers . This is a radical departure from the past where any one will just be presented; we are saying there must be something to see before voting any body”.
Before Governor  Nyeson Wike was elected into his current office,  he had consistently justified the mandates given to him at different times as Obio/Akpor council chairman, Chief of Staff, Government House and as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
“The Electorates should look at peoples track records, if they have good standing in the society and if given the opportunity, they will justify the mandate of the people’’, he said.
He noted that his group was committed to preaching  and educating Rivers people on the elements of good governance, stressing that ’’Good governance is all about meeting the legitimate expectations of the people, such as providing social and physical infrastructure  that  will improve the lots of citizens irrespective of their political, tribal and religious affiliations”.
He however said that, time has come for the citizens to insist that whoever is in government  embarks on projects that would touch the lives  of the people, just as the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike is doing.
