The Rivers State House of Assembly (RVHA) has threatened to take stiff action against Bua Group of Companies operating in the State over alleged disrespect and negligence of employment procedure in the State.
The Chairman, House Committee on Employment, Hon. Martins Manana made this known to newsmen, last Wednesday, at the Bua Sugar Company’s premises in Port Harcourt.
He said, the House had received several petitions against the management of the company over illegal employment and unfair treatment to few River indigenes who are on the staff.
He said the Assembly wrote to invite the management of the company severally to find out the truth of the matters, but the management turned down all the invitations, and even denied the Assembly audience in the recent meeting scheduled to hold last Wednesday at the company’s premises for both the management and the House Committee on Employment in Port Harcourt.
Manana, who angrily led the committee’s members out of the company’s premises wondered why the company’s management does not want any meeting with the Assembly and press coverage without explanation.
He said the action of the company’s officials has shown that the company is hiding serious issues that are against the public and government interest.
The committee’s chairman said the Assembly will not let the company go scot free, for not following due process in employment and for showing disrespect to authority of the State.
Several means employed to reach the management of the company proved abortive.
