RVHA Rates MCC High Over Standards
The Rivers State House of Assembly (RVHA), has rated an indigenous company operating in the state, Monier Construction Company (MCC), to “B” class for complying to environmental standards.
The Chairman, Assembly Committee on Environment, Hon Christian Ahiakwo, announced this immediately after the House committee’s assessment of the activities of the company, last Tuesday, in Port Harcourt.
According to him, MCC is the only indigenous company that has improved on its compliance to environmental laws and employment of indigenes.
Ahiakwo said his committee, after appraising the company’s environmental profile and its activities in various sites, arrived at the conclusion that the company is conscious of environment.
He urged the company to maintain the tempo to avoid being listed among the companies to be sanctioned for non-compliance to the environmental laws in the state.
Ahiakwo reiterated the Assembly’s decision to liaise with the State Ministry of Environment and that of justice to prosecute any company that falls below the expectation in terms of environmental standards.
He said the state government has already taken steps to rid the state of unhealthy environment, adding that any company that refused to comply, will face the wrought of the law”.
He further said that the Assembly will after the inspection provide legislative means to strengthen laws for protection of environment to attract business and ensure healthy living.
