Prisons Decongestion: Comptroller Demands More Vehicles

The Rivers State Comptroller of Prisons, Mr Amaliri Ifeanyi has solicited for the assistance of the State government in the provision of vehicles to aid the prison authority perform its responsibility effectively in the state.
Mr Amaliri made this appeal while speaking with journalists during the just concluded State Golden Jubilee gaol Delivery exercise conducted by the State Chief Judge, Justice Adama Iyaye-Laminkara held at the Port Harcourt and Ahoada Prisons over the weekend.
The State Prison boss averred that the command at the moment had only three serviceable vehicles and added that such was not enough to convey inmates to court regularly.
According to him, the Command was making the appeal to the State governor to use the period of the State Jubilee celebration to remember the command and make some intervention in areas of logistics.
“We need the State government to assist us with five vehicles to enable us adequately function.
“We have only three vehicles currently and we will be happy if the governor can extend the joy of the celebration, we know he is a listening governor.”
According to him, most of the inmates in prison custody are indigenes of the State and need  their trials to be fast tracked in various courts across the state.
He urged the State government to institute some packages for all the inmates granted pardon by the State Chief Judge in order to rehabilitate them, adding that they may be prone to crimes and criminality if they are not properly engaged.
Mr Amaliri expressed happiness over the Jubilee gaol delivery exercise adding that if regularly conducted it would assist in the decongestion of prisons in the state.
