Lawyer Tasks Journalists On Professional Ethics

An Ilorin based legal practitioner, Mr Rotimi Jimoh, has urged journalists in the country to always imbibe the ethics of the profession in the discharge of their duties.
Jimoh, who gave the advice last Saturday in an interview with newsmen in Ilorin, said journalists in the country must prioritise professionalism above self interest.
He noted that if journalists inculcate ethics of the profession, their job would be less arduous and bring out the best in them.
According to him, the Freedom of Information Bill (FoI) passed during President Goodluck Jonathan’s regime was designed to guarantee freedom for journalists to have unfettered access to information.
”The bill guarantees every media house freedom of expression without any fear of harassment and also give room for journalists to work independently,” he said.
While speaking on the freedom of the press, Jimoh canvassed the need for government to allow media houses to operate independently for Nigeria to attain a full democratic status.
”In order to maintain their integrity in Nigeria, journalists need to be given free hand, be precise, concise and unbiased in their reporting as well as abiding by the ethics governing their profession,” he said.
He, therefore, advised all journalists in the country to be disciplined and shun any form of inducement from politicians.
