Flyover Market: Activist Urges 24-Hour Surveillance After Demolition

Following the demolition of the flyover market in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Government has been called upon to mount 24-hour surveillance  in the area in order to prevent return of the traders.
An activist, Dr. Sokari  Soberekon made the call  during an interview  with newsmen  at the weekend in Port Harcourt.
He said the traders have been a huge source of mess at the area going by the nature of their business.
Soberekon, noted that since  several  attempts to quit  them over the years  by previous administration failed, the best way to maintain the recent  victory was to mount  a 24-hour security at the place.
He  regretted that the  traders activities have also affected those with  genuine  businesses  in the vicinity.
He explained that the traders were only interested in profit maximization regardless of the misance they have so far caused.
The activist reasoned that the traders might have been paying heavily to some  unseen hands, thus the blunt  refusal to  leave the area.
He said the illegal activities of these traders could not be tolerated in any modern city of the world.
As a way out, he said efforts must be made to rebuild the Mile One main market as to boost economic activities.
According to him, no one-city state like Rivers State Finds it easy to flush  illegal  trade operators, saying by that, plans must be concluded soonest by the governor, to create more cities in the state.
The Commissioner for Urban Development, Hon. Chinyere Igwe, has explained that the move to demolish illegal structures in the state, was in line with governemnt’s determination to return the state to its Garden City status.
