Femi Kuti Sets New World Record On Saxophone

Though nominated for the Grammy awards for four times but yet to win one, Afro beat Scion and son of Late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the Abami Eda, Femi Kuti sets new world record of longest time on the saxophone, he broke the 1997 world record of legendary saxophonist, Kenny G who held an E-flat for over 45 minutes, 37 seconds and sets a new world record of 46 minutes, 38 seconds.
According to his proud sister, Yeni Kuti, femi broke a December 1997 World record set by legendary saxophonist Kenny G. when he held an E-flat for 45 minutes and 37 seconds, femi did broke, set a new record of 46 minutes, 38 seconds.
It was reported that to accomplish this, Kenny G. used a technique called “circular Brea thing which keeps a steady stream of air flooding through the sexaphone even as the player breaths”. For femi, it is unclear yet what technique he used or even the member of the saxophone family he used to achieve the massive feat.
His happy elder sister Yeni shared the news on her instagram page on Monday May 8. She wrote: “yesterday evening may 7 at the new Africa shrine, Kuti broke the world rcord for the longest single not on a sexaphone note set in 1997 by Kenny G. The record stood at 45 minutes 37 seconds. Femi did 46 minutes, 38 seconds. We have a world champ.
This was witnessed by a large audience that included Senator Ben Murray Bruce, the deputy high Commissioners of Netherlands and the United Kingdom etc, Femi did it at 55 years old.
Not exactly a spring chicken”
Femi started playing the sax when he was 15, he went on to become a member of his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s band where he was for some years before he started his own band called ‘positive force’ in the late 80s. Aside the saxophone, Femi plays other musical instruments like trumpet and piano.
He has been nominated for a grammy award four times in the world music category in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013, but did not win, he now awaits an official recognition by the Guiness world record.
