Ex-Rep Lauds INEC Over Voter Registration

A former member of House of Representatives, Dr Sokonte H. Davies, has lauded the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), for the commencement of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, Dr  Davies said the exercise was very timely given the need to update the voters register for the forthcoming general elections in 2019 and enjoined all eligible citizens to take advantage of the exercise as this will give INEC ample opportunity to plan and prepare for the 2019 general elections.
Dr  Davies, who is also the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), however, appealed to the electoral body to take into consideration the challenges of people living in remote riverine areas of the state, particularly in Degema Local Government Area.
He said the appeal became necessary in view of the fact that some of the communities are not contiguous and in difficult terrains.
He called on the people to embrace the exercise and see it as part of their civic responsibility and also requested INEC to see how people from Bille, Ke, Tombia, Bakana, Bukuma and Oguruama can actively benefit, as they are not in any way close to Degema, the LGA headquarters.
He pointed out that if this challenge is not addressed, many in these communities will be disenfranchised.
He, therefore, expressed optimism and confidence in the leadership of the electoral umpire to rise to this challenge by doing the needful, which is to provide registration materials in these communities and localities.
