Electrocution: Oyo-Ita Seeks Sanction Against PHED
The Head of Service of the Federation, Dr Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, has called for sanctions against Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) for maintaining their facilities or using inferior equipment that do not conform to acceptable standard.
She said, “for me, there should be a sanction against PHED when they fall short in their services”, adding that public infrastructures needed to be attended to as even the death of one person is bad enough.
Oyo-ita expressed this feeling during her visit to the Univesity of Calabar Teching Hospital to sympathise with the victims who survived the electrocution from the PHED high tension cable.
She said, for people to go out to enjoy football in a classic moment and that events turns out most regrettable leading to the loss of lives calls for proper assessment on the quality of jobs and services public utility providers give to the public.
The Head of Service described the event that led to the death of many young men and women at a football viewing centre at Nyangasang as sad and most unfortunate.
She commended the management and staff of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for exhibiting real professionalism in handling the incident, applauding the expertise of the lead plastic surgeon, Dr Otei Otei, the Head of Nursing, Dr Ernest Ochang and the Chief Medical Director, Prof Thomas Agan.
She also commended the Cross River State Governor, Prof Ben Ayade, for paying the medical bills of all the victims and for his promise to also fly the most seriously burnt victim to South Africa for further treatment.
In his response, the Chief Medical Director, (UCTH), Prof. Thomas Agan appreciated the Head of Service of the Federation and her team for the visit and commendation.
lot of equipments have been donated to support the training objective of the Hospital.
Some dignitaries who were in attendance included the Head of Service of the State, Barrister Ekpenyong Henshaw and many Permanent Secretaries in the State Civil Service.
In another development, the Head of Service of the Federation, Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita has expressed appreciation to God for giving Cross River State committed leaders as Governors and administrators since her creation.
Speaking on Cross River at 50, she inferred that lots of developments have evolved in the State and that the destiny of the State is in the hands of Cross Riverians, adding that Cross Riverians believe in diligence and hard work.
Also speaking, she charged Cross Riverians to take advantage of the numerous Natural Resources in the State and exploit them for their benefit and welfare citizens, urging them to protect what they have and advised that the State can venture into power production for domestic use and export to neighboring states.
According to Mrs. Oyo-Ita, she got reliable information from certified authority that most of the state natural resources are the best in Africa but regrettably the State has nothing to show in terms of benefit from these resources.
