Displaced Waterfronts’ Dwellers Seek Resettlement
Thousands of people who were recently displaced as a result of the demolition of some waterfronts in Eagle Island Port Harcourt have appealed for resettlement by the State Government for its action.
The State Government had demolished some waterfronts at Eagle Island citing security concerns and the inhuman and degrading environment.
However, a cross-section of the displaced persons told newsmen at a media briefing that an alternative arrangement would help to reduce their sufferings, while describing reasons given by the government as germane, they also pledge to cooperate with the government in the areas of crime fighting as well as ensure the environment is conducive for human habitation.
According to the text of the briefing read by Mr. Michael Ogotogute “we appreciate and support the concern by the government over the issues of security and development in the society. We seriously need security since our communities like many other urban areas in the State have been affected with the twin problems of underdevelopment and insecurity.”
The displaced persons also commended Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike for the unprecedented level of development in the state and pledged their unalloyed loyalty and support.
Also speaking, the programme officer of the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD), Mr. Steve Obudokwe urged for widespread consultations on future waterfronts demolition exercise in the state.
He also urged the displaced persons to continue to be loyal and support governments programme to ensure a better life for the citizenry.
