The President of Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), Prof. Benjamin Ubi, says the adoption of biotechnology will facilitate agric growth in the country.
Ubi made the declaration in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, recently.
According to him, biotechnology, including genetic engineering and production of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), provides powerful tools for sustainable agric development.
“GMOs currently account for about 16 per cent of the world’s crops, particularly soybean, maize, cotton and canola and there are indications that the growing trend will continue”, he said.
He explained that the country should strive to grow what to eat, adding  that biotechnology was the key to achieving the feat.
Ubi also pledged the support of the BSN for the efforts of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), to harness the potential of modern biotechnology.
“BSN, as a stakeholder in biosafety, will continue to support NBMA, we should all be assured that no biotechnology product will be imposed on anyone”, he said.
He urged anti-GMO campaigns not to play politics with issues that could engender food security and alleviate poverty.
