AFAN Decries High Fertiliser Cost In Edo

The Coordinator of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Edo North Senatorial District, Dr. Abdullahi Muhammed has expressed concern over the prohibitive cost and non-availability of fertiliser in the state.
Muhammed told newsmen in Auchi yesterday that the non-availability of the commodity would affect agricultural production in the state.
“Edo is one of the states that have high concentration of farmers with low agricultural tools, and this makes it difficult for our farmers to achieve high yields.
“We are in another farming season and our farmers are worried about their neglect by government with regard to fertiliser supplies to boost crop yield in the state,” he said.
Muhammed said that farmers in the state had already started crop planting in their farms, adding, however, that if fertiliser was not made available on time, farmers might not have good harvests.
He called on the Presidential Committee on Fertiliser Initiative to ensure the availability of the commodity in the state.
“The few farmers, who are able to endure the rigours of getting the commodity, are groaning over the high cost, as a bag of fertiliser now sells for N9,000,’’ he said.
Muhammed urged the Federal Government to speed up its efforts to provide fertiliser for farmers, saying that any delay in the supply of the commodity would affect the farmers and the country in general.
