The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), has appealed to the Federal Government to consider engaging indigenous firms in the planning and execution of the second runway in the Abuja Airport project.
President, NIQS, Mrs Mercy Iyortyer, made this appeal in an interview with newmen, on the construction of the second runway for the airports.
Iyortyer, expressed regrets that a second runway was not taken into consideration before now and advised that in managing projects effectively, government should be proactive.
According to her, “although it is for safety of air passengers in and out of Abuja, it has at the same time resulted in an-economic loss to businesses in Abuja and airlines alike.
Nevertheless, I am happy that a second runway is now being considered to avoid a repeat of this incident”.
She said, as a professional body, NIQS continuously works to enhance technical and professional competencies of its members in adhering to best practices and to offer quality services at all times.
Yortyer stated, “efficient management and delivery of building and engineering construction projects are largely driven by Sound Contract Documentation and Project Administration”.
Additionally, she said, “in an era of economic recession characterized by a significant decline in revenue and in order to ensure that our scarce resources are more effectively and efficiently deployed, it is imperative for the institute to reinforce our members’ completeness in effective project planning and delivery”.
She called on professionals to engage in politics in order to influence decision making processes that would favour infrastructural development across the nation.
