Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of Nigeria Association of women Journlists  (NAWOJ), Mrs Lilian Okonkwo has stressed the need for female journalists in the state to catch up with the current trend in social media.
Okonkwo, who stated this during a one-day training programme organised by State NAWOJ in partnership with  Collaborative Living and Development Initiative (COLIDEIN) on personal  development, held  at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Port Harcourt last Tuesday said there  was need  for training and re-training of members.
She said: “the world we know now is a global village in which lots of work are done via the social media,  training  programmes such as this would properly  package  the female professional  journalists in the state  to stand out and  compete favourably with their  counterparts in other parts of the world.
Her words: “I noticed that a lot of people access scholarship and Business proposals  via the internet and opined there is need for female journalists in the state to be trained on how to access these scholarships  and how  to write good Business proposals”.
“We cannot limit ourselves, we cannot remain at a spot, but to move forward, and how we can move forward is to build on capacity, know what people are doing”.
She expressed her displeasure over  members’ poor attitude to meetings and training programmes such as this, which is meant to help  uplift their well being and make  them stand  out in their carrier,  adding that such  lack-luster, results  to lack of political will and  docility  which  would not take them to their expected heights.
She urged members to avail   themselves of the several  opportunities explored  through the social  media,  adding that many women  journalists had been  at the low ebb  of performance.
On her part, the Coordinator of  Collaborative Living and Development Initiative  (COLIDEIN), a non-governmental organisation, Chidinma Mbaegbu charged NAWOJ members to pay greater attention to personal development than anything else, saying that until you discover yourselves you will remain  a nobody.
In her  response,  the pioneer NAWOJ chairman, Mrs Uche Atuzie said she and other participants benefitted  immensely from the training,  pointing out that the  scholarship programme is very important to the lives of the beneficiaries.
