The Federal Government has assured stakeholders in the poultry industry that it is committed to providing them relief measures.
Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, according to a release obtained by our correspondent from AgroNigeria, recently in Port Harcourt, gave the assurance during a second meeting held with stakeholders in Abuja.
The poultry industry has been bedeviled by an outbreak of Avian influenzas which affected almost four million birds in 2015, amongst other challenges.
“The poultry is a local one that needs to be protected urgently”, the vice president said.
Osinbajo noted that the poultry industry should be a major plant of the agric sector, even as he assured that the government would give it all the help it deserves.
He maintained that support for the local industry would check poultry-related importation, which is currently a drain on the country’s foreign exchange.
The leader of the delegation of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Dr Ayoala Oduntan remarked that poultry contributes 25 per cent of agric GDP.
