A Port Harcourt based lawyer, Mr. Jackson Assor has commended the Senate for asking the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to drop plans to extradite Sen Buruji Kashamu to the United States and allow Nigerian courts to handle the issue.
Mr. Assor, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt on Monday, noted that the decision by Senate had underscored the confidence reposed in our courts.
He said Nigerian courts were living up to expectation, and should be given a chance to handle the matter.
Mr. Assor also remarked that the United States ought to bring the evidence against Sen Kashamu to a Nigerian court to ensure a speedy trial.
He said drug trafficking and abuse were punishable both in Nigeria and the United States hence Sen. Kashamu could be tried in either of the countries.
He said the extradition of Sen Kashamu was unnecessary and lauded the Senate for the decision.
It will be recalled that Kashamu had petitioned the Senate, alleging plans to extradite him to the US over alleged drug related offences.
A law firm called TRLP represented by one Prince Ajibola Oluyele said the petition was written for intervention of the Senate.
