Real Madrid are through to the semi-finals of this year’s Champions League, after they defeated Bayern Munich 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu, in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
The La Liga side came into the game with a 2-1 lead from the first leg at the Allianz Arena, but Carlo Ancelotti’s men looked the better team from the blast of the referee’s whistle.
Robert Lewandowski gave the Bundesliga champions the lead from the penalty spot, after Arjen Robben was fouled in the area. Cristiano Ronaldo levelled with a deft header, before Sergio Ramos’ own goal swung the tie back in Bayern’s favour.
Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to reach 100 Champions League goals as he scored a hat-trick in yesterday’s quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich.
The Portugal star, who racked up a century of goals in Europe in the first leg, headed in his first of the game on 76 minutes before firing Real back ahead in the tie on 105 minutes.
Ronaldo struck his third goal five minutes later to all but secure Real’s place in the semi-finals.
He has now scored 85 goals in 85 appearances in the Champions League for Madrid. He also netted 15 in the competition and one in a qualifier for Manchester United prior to moving to the Spanish capital in 2009.
However, Madrid regained momentum after Arturo Vidal was shown his second yellow card.
Ronaldo added two more goals, while Marco Asensio got a fourth, as Zinedine Zidane’s men ran riot in the end.
In the other game, Madrid battled into the Champions League semi-finals for the third time in four seasons yesterday and ended Leicester City’s debut run in Europe’s elite competition.
The Spanish side went through 2-1 on aggregate after the two sides drew 1-1 on the night at Leicester’s King Power Stadium.
A Saul Niguez first-half header left the English Premier League champions needing to score three times to go through, and although Jamie Vardy pulled a goal back in the second half and Leicester bombarded the away goal, Atletico held on.
