FG To Engage 10,000 Ex-Agitators In Farming
The Federal
Government has concluded plans to engage ex-agitators in the Niger Delta in farming in 2017.
In a press statement made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt recently, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and the Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme, General Paul Boroh (rtd) in a New Year message in Abuja said about 10,000 ex-agitators would be involved in the agric programme.
“This is aimed at engaging the ex-agitators in the Niger Delta in integrated modern farming method,” he said.
He expressed the hope that the programme will provide sufficient food that will feed the people of the region in particular and the nation at large.
According to the Special Adviser, the programme would also serve as an alternative to the destroyed traditional occupation in the region due to oil and gas production.
He further disclosed that the 10,000 ex-agitators will be empowered after the training to own their own farms through cluster farms arrangements in collaboration with the existing national and state agric institutions.
Boroh also revealed that already the Biotechnology Centre in Odi in Bayelsa State has begun the training of 500 ex-agitators, adding that the exercise was a continuous one.
