The Rivers State Waste
Management Agency (RIWAMA), has identified the disposal of refuse in public drains as a major cause of flooding in Port Harcourt City its and environs.
Sole Administrator of the Agency, Bro. Felix Obuah, who said this during an event in Port Harcourt recently also said that the agency has commenced an awareness campaign and enforcement programme aimed at enlightening the public on the need to properly dispose waste at approved receptacles and in bin bags. According to the RIWAMA boss, the move will go long way in reducing the volumes of pet and can bottles found in our waterways, which remain a major cause of blocked drains and flooding .
“It is my strong belief that with new awareness and enlightenment campaigns we shall achieve better result indicative of free flowing drains in the state.”
Bro Obuah also said that the agency has consistently warned residents in the city to desist from building into and over drainage lines.
“This is a major concern as the grab for land has led to building on the major waterway therefore creating a funnel that leads to flooding in some areas of the state.
“We once more appeal to those building along waterway to desist from this.
“We call on communities along waterway to report any such defaulters for appropriate action,” he said.
The Sole Administrator also used the occasion to announce plans by RIWAMA to commence the de-silting of major roads, waterway and drains which will bring much more relief to communities and places where causes of flash floods have been experienced after having rainfalls in the state.
