Owerri Stands Still For Ojukwu
The 4th memorial anniversary of late Odumegwu Chukwuemeka Ojukwu which took place recently at the New Owerri has been fully commended by many as a great way to honour the late Igbo hero.
The activity, which commenced at about 1.05pm was historically chairmaned by a renowned professor of English at the University of Lagos, Prof Anthonia Maduekwe, who added colour to it via flawless presentation of her remarks in Igbo and English Languages with the exposition of late Odumegwu Ojukwu’s overt qualities, that propelled him to fight for the liberation of Igbo nation.
She described Ojukwu as a man with great wisdom, vision and mission which every Igboman recognized while he was alive and will continue to remember even after death.
Maduekwe commended the resourcefulness and enduring traits associated with the average Igbo man, advising them not to relent in making use of those great blessings in all their developmental activities.
She congratulated the initiator of the annual event, Raph Uwazuruike and all the MASSOB members for their contributions.
In his speech, the former Chief Security Officer to Late General Abacha, Alhaji Hamza Al-Mustapha, stated the need for Igbo leaders to show a sincere leadership that would engender unity of purpose, love and understanding among the Igbos.
He praised the leadership qualities exhibited by Ojukwu in his lifetime, and called for such regular remembrance.
He advised the Igbos to face the challenges before them squarely and fight for their rights and liberties.
The late Odumegwu Ojukwu’s widow, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, in her contribution, eulogized Barr. Raph Uwazuruike’s doggedness in celebrating the life of her husband annually.
She counseled the Igbos to learn to celebrate their sons when alive, noting that their priorities should be kept aright.
Mrs. Ojukwu, who was the former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain frowned at lack of unity existing among the Igbos, and called for a change of attitude.
Some of the important personalities who graced the occasion include: Dr. Fredrick Fasheun, Eze Obidiegwu (Eze Nri), Major Hamza Amustapha, Chioma Ajunwa, Alhaji Shettima Yerima President of Ariwa Consultative Forum Archbishop Emmanuel Iheanacho, among others.
