The Federal Road Safety
Commission (FRSC), has advised motorists to guard against vehicular fire outbreaks caused by hot weather conditions.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra State, Mr Sunday Ajayi, gave the warning in an interview with newsmen in Awka. According to him, there has been increase in vehicular fire out breaks due to change in weather.
Ajayi, who said that the sector had recorded not less than three cases of burnt vehicles on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway in the last four days, warned motorists to be wary of the electrical and wiring conditions of their vehicles. He said that carrying of combustible items including petrol should be discouraged.
He however said no lives were lost in the fires, noting that a few minor injuries were recorded in the incidents.
“We must take into account the fact that we are now in dry season and the harmattan is here already.
“Our advice is that motorists should ensure that the electrical and wiring conditions of their vehicles are in order.
“Just yesterday a luxurious bus burst into flame without any stress, it did not collide with anything but suddenly it went up in flames.
“Similar fire was recorded at Umunya and on Friday, an SUV was burnt, it simply means that the change in weather is causing sparks to flame up.
“We are lucky, no death was recorded in the various cases, motorists are advised to ensure that they guard against these unfortunate incidents,” he said.
Ajayi said that motorists should also ensure that their fire extinguishers were handy and in usable condition, adding that the disaster could have been mitigated if the fire was fought at the budding stage.
The sector commander also pointed out that the season would witness more tyre blowouts.
