The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArB)United Kingdom has advocated for effective arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) as a more potent means to assuage the negative disputes common in the operations of oil and gas industry.

The chairman of Nigerian branch of the institute, Mrs Adedoyin Rhodes-Vivor, stated this at the 2016 Annual conference of CIArb in Port Harcourt recently.

According to Rhodes-Vivor, arbitration remains the most effective means and has capacity to reduce pressure from the nation’s court system.

Speaking on the theme of the conferences, “Exploring New Frontiers in Arbitration and ADR,” the chairman noted that it was timely and apt as new frontiers were emerging in arbitration and alternative dispute resolution plane.

Chairman of the conference planning committee, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, said continued entrenchment of Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution in Nigeria was an essential tool for economic recovery.

Also speaking, former Governor of Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia, said arbitration remains the fastest, shortest and less expensive way of settling disputes in any society.

He stressed the need for the nation to give more attention to the strategy in checking and resolving conflicts.
