A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced a 32-year-old unemployed man, Ayomide Coker, to  six months imprisonment for dealing in 350 g of hemp.

Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo sentenced Coker after he pleaded guilty to a charge of drug trafficking.

Oguntoyinbo said the six-month imprisonment would start running from the date of his arrest.

She ordered that the drugs should be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for destruction.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 18 at Isale-Oja, in Agege, Lagos.

Aernan reviewed the facts of the case and tendered some documents and the hemp as evidence.

He tendered a written statement of the accused, a request for scientific aid form as well as the bulk of the substance.

Aernan urged the court to convict the accused based on the evidence before it.

The accused had pleaded for mercy, saying he was a first time offender and would never engage in any crime again if given a second chance.
