FRSC Begins Night Patrol To Check Overloading
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Sector Command, said it had commenced night patrol to ensure 24-hour sanity and safety on the highway.
The Sector Commander, Mr Sunday Ajayi, said this in Awka while displaying some overloaded vehicles impounded at night by personnel of the commission.
Ajayi decried the violation of safety rules by commercial motorists, particularly at night, adding that the non-compliance informed the extension of the commission”s patrol period.
He said that transporters, particularly as the yuletide approached, often overloaded their vehicles to maximise profit and thereby endangering lives of other road users on the highway.
The sector commander said that the prevalent offences included overloading, use of worn out tyres, use of fog lights (extra light) and dangerous driving.
Ajayi said the extended period of patrol would be sustained until there was attitudinal change among those who indulged in such behaviours.
“We want to tell the people that overloaded vehicle is an accident waiting to happen.
“When a vehicle is overloaded, it loses balance, the lives of drivers and passengers, including other road users are threatened.
“These offenders have decided to take to the night because of our visibility and presence in the day time,’’ he said.
The commander said that as part of efforts to enhance safety and security, motorcycles had been banned from operation in the town from 7.00p.m. to 6.00a.m.
He said that anyone caught violating the order would be apprehended and prosecuted.
“We shall be firm with those charged with contravention of these laws, and we appeal to the general public to cooperate with the FRSC in Anambra to make our roads safe,” Ajayi said.
