Flooding: NGO Harps On Recycling Of Waste Materials
An NGO, Advocacy for Environmental and Sanitation Integrity, has urged governments at all levels to checkmate flooding by formulating good policies on recycling of waste materials.
the Director-General of the NGO, Mr Abdullahi Aremu, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
“People will generate income if they can start sorting and recycling their wastes, especially the pet bottles, papers, cans, among others, as they are resources merchants buy everywhere,” Aremu said.
He also called for recycling of most of the materials and waste disposed along water ways that blocked canals and caused flooding and environmental hazards.
Aremu urged the public to cultivate the culture of proper waste management which, he said, could be achieved through recycling, composting, landfilling or burning of the waste materials.
The environmentalist also called on stakeholders to coordinate, engage and negotiate with the Ministry of Environment and relevant waste management agencies in the country.
“The negotiation will help all stakeholders to understand the needs, problems and perceptions concerning the waste management regime already in use.
“More importantly, through engagement of stakeholders, roles can be assigned to specific groups, individuals or institutions,’’ he said.
Aremu urged waste management agencies to adopt the ‘stakeholder relations approach’ to achieve success in their task of ensuring a cleaner and safer environment.
