The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, has ordered the immediate treatment of bullet-wound victims by all the medical practitioners in Imo State.

Lakanu stated, “From now onwards, any victim of gunshot from armed robbers who may be brought to any health facility in the state should be immediately given adequate treatment without getting a documented clearance from the police.”

The police commissioner gave the order to members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Imo State Chapter, while receiving good partnership award from the body, in Owerri, the state capital.

He informed the NMA that the identity of the bullet wound victim must be provided to him or his men through the medical practitioners’ body while the treatment could go on unhampered.

Lakanu commended the role of medical practitioners in the good health and economic growth of the nation, and charged them not to rest on their oars in efforts to make the country better.

The Tide reports that the award ceremony formed the last activity (thanksgiving/luncheon) of a week-long programme of the 2016 Imo NMA conference at the City Global Hotel, Owerri.

The MNA also recognized other personalities, including former deputy speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, Deacon Chike Okeafor, among others.

It could be recalled that before now, a good number of prominent Nigerians had lost their precious lives from a delayed treatment of wounds associated with stray bullets arising from armed robbery-related scenes by medical practitioners owing to non-presentation of police extracts or clearance letters by victims’ relations.
