Airport Manager Explains Lighting Problems
The Manager, Port
Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Mr. C.N. Nwobu, has explained the reason for the interruption of power supply at the airport, particularly in the night.
Speaking while interacting with Aviation Correspondents, Nwobu explained that the reason for the darkness noticed in some areas at night is because the power supply is being sourced through generators, due to inconsistency of the national grid.
According to him, it costs the management so much money to consistently run the generator set on daily basis arising from the inconsistency of the power generation and distribution companies.
He said that the present economic challenges facing the country have made the cost of operations now to be on the increase, but expressed confidence that the challenge will be tackled.
The airport manager, however, noted that electricity and lighting at the airports are very vital, according to International Standard Practice for Safety and Security of the Airports.
“For Safety reasons, we try to ensure that the lighting system is stable at the run-way for landing of aircraft at nights.
“That is why we concentrate through generators, and we will not depend on power from national grid, because when once a flight wants to land, and there is a sudden power outage, it can lead to accident”, he said.
Nwobu maintained that the airport management is very much determined to ensure that the lighting situation is being tackled so as to enhance safety and security at the airport, especially on the airport access road.
