The Imo State Chairman of
the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Darlington Akukwu, has lauded the recall of the ‘embattled and suspended’ Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Dr. Angela Uwakwem, by the Federal Ministry of Health Panel that investigated a number of allegations against her by the Joint Health Workers Union, noting that such a singular act has proven her innocence, and will at the same time help bring sanity to FMC for optimal services.
Akukwu, who made the disclosure to newsmen at the NMA secretariat, Owerri, stated that with the return of the medical director to her duty post, the labour crisis tormenting the free flow of health services at the Federal Medical Centre has come to an end.
He assured all the health workers involved in the labour battle that with the recall of the medical director, nobody would be molested by the management for taking part in the unrest, describing the action as “No Victor, no Vanquished”.
He counseled the health workers to learn a great lesson from the drama, adding that there was no labour law that empowers an employee to terminate the services of another employee other than an employer terminating the services of an employee with certain proven irregularities.
The newly enthroned Imo State NMA chairman exonerated all the medical doctors at FMC, Owerri, from the labour crisis, warning people to know when to drop their personal interest for the general interest.
He equally commended the action of the Federal Ministry of Health in dissolving the interim Management Board of Federal Medical Centre headed by Professor Ndueke, stressing that Uwakwem’s development- conscious administration could not be compared with the outgoing interim management inputs.
The soft-spoken medical boss and his Vice, Dr. Victor Eche, unveiled the activities for the physicians’ week that will begin on the 31st October, 2016, and end on the 5th November, 2016.
