Society Tasks FG On Metallurgical Sector Roadmap
Prof. Benjamin Adewuyi,
the President, Nigeria Metallurgical Society, has called on the Federal Government to formulate a broader roadmap to reposition the metals industry for the growth of the sector.
Adewuyi told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that apart from the roadmap for mining development, there should be a broader metal industry version.
He said it should include metal extraction, processing, refining, foundry, fabrication, recycling, research and development.
He said that no much of steel activities were captured in the roadmap, saying that the document would have contained everything about metal industry, including the artisans.
“ Apart from the Roadmap for Mining Development, there should be a broader document to reposition the metals industry.
“Such roadmap will look holistically at local materials and manufacturing technologies as related to designs, challenges and technical gaps and provide adequate information required for the growth in the metal sector.
“The roadmap must be able to provide adequate information on metal industry development and sustainability in line with government policies such as the automobile, housing, transport and other metal related allied policies,” he said.
He called on government to upgrade metallurgical research and development centres to provide training and capacity building for the mines and metals industries.
According to him, the metallurgical research centres must be expanded and be able to evolve ways of developing and adapting modern research and technologies for recovery of complex ores in response to depleting rich mineral deposits.
