RVHA Tasks Journalists On New Laws
The Rivers State House of
Assembly (RVHA) has called on journalists in the state to ensure that the electorate is well sensitised on new laws so far amended and passed by the 8th Assembly from 2015 to date.
The chairman, House Committee on Information and Training, Hon. Samuel Ogeh gave the charge yesterday, when he received the leadership of Nigeria Association of Woman Journalists (NAWOJ) in his office at Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt.
According to him, many citizens of the state are still ignorant of the new laws so far passed by the present Assembly in Rivers State.
He said, many people, especially those in rural areas are yet to understand the rudiment and the consequence behind some of the new laws, like the anti-kidnapping law so far amended in the state.
Ogeh stressed that if the majority of the people in the state are aware of the law, crime rate would be reduced, considering the consequence attached to some of the laws as penalties.
He also tasked the women journalists to protect the rights of women and teenagers in the state, saying that with proper awareness and exposure of illegality against women, female folks would be free to interact freely without intimidation and harassment by their male counterpart.
The chairperson of NAWOJ, Rives State Chapter, Mrs Lilian Okonwwo had earlier said that the visit was intended to seek the support of the Assembly in their forthcoming NAWOJ week in Port Harcourt.
Okonwwo thanked Ogeh for his hospitality.
