RVHA Plans Legislation On Urban Dev
The Rivers State House of
Assembly has vowed to support the Ministry of Urban Development towards ensuring a better living and infrastructure to the people through legislations.
The Chairman House committee on Land, Housing and Urban Renewal, Hon Deeyah Bariene who stated this in Port Harcourt said the Assembly would help pass legislationsthat would ensure good living condition for the people of the state.
He commended the Rivers State government and the ministry of urban development and Physical planning in its efforts at ensuring that policies formulated are carried out, assuring that the Assembly, under the present leadership would back the ministry with legislative policies.
The lawmaker further said the Assembly was determined to process the passage of the template for quality living for the people of the state, if it gets to the House.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Urban Development Physical Planning, Hon. Chinyere Igwe had earlier said that in accordance with this year’s theme: Housing at the Centre, the government was poised to eliminate slum dwelling and develop housing with in the midst of basic infrastructure.
Delivering a paper on the theme, a lecturer at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Dr. Obinna Victor listed some of the challenges facing slum dwellers as poverty, high accommodation costs, forceful evictions and demolitions and recommended that government should find a means of controlling landlords with a view to lowering housing cost.
He regretted that legislations passed by previous lawmakers were hardly implemented.
