RVHA Passes IAUE Amendment Bill 2016
A bill to amend the retire
ment age of lecturers and professors of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has been passed into law by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The bill titled “The Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Amendment Bill 2016” was approved yesterday at the plenary session of the House in Port Harcourt.
The State Assembly reviewed and approved the retirement age of professors from 65 to 70 years, while the retirement age of other academic staff was reviewed upward to 65 from 60 years.
Under the new law, a professor must have 10 years working experience before being qualified for the appointment as Vice Chancellor, in tune with the Nigeria Universities Commission’s (NUC) guidelines, as recommended by the House Committee on Education led by Hon. Martin Amaewhule.
The two areas of the amendment bill was sequel to the introduction of new Sub-Section 25(A) and 26(B) Under Section 26 of the Nigeria Universities Commission’s guidelines.
The House also stated that the insertion of a new sub-paragraph 3 under paragraph 3 of the first schedule to the principal law was in order and therefore approved.
The Assembly also repealed the entire sub-paragraph (5) of paragraph 5(i) and (ii) of the first schedule to the principal law, and replaced it with the amendment proposed that the law should be cited as the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (Amendment No. 2 Law No. 6, 2016.
The amendment bill was supported by all the 15 lawmakers present at the plenary session, when past into vote by the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Dabotorudina.
The Speaker, who announced the approval of the amendment bill, said the amendment would stabilise the administrative and education systems in the University.
