Rivers Reclamation Excites Motorists In Rivers
Following the ongoing
land reclamation project at the Ogbun-nu-Abali/Nkpogu waterfront on the Eastern by-pass aimed at developing a modern housing estate by the Rivers State government, motorists and other road users have hailed the project.
A cross section of commercial taxi drivers who spoke to The Tide yesterday expressed delight and called for the speedy completion of the project.
According to Boniface Uche, a taxi driver who plies the Fly-over Abuloma route, the development would help in checking the menace of hoodlums in the area.
Uche claimed that the area under reclamation has been a den of hoodlums for a very long time.
While recounting instances where drivers and passengers are robbed at that axis, especially at night, he added that the government should also look at other areas along the Eastern by-pass for such projects.
Also, some residents of the area who spoke to The Tide while also narrating the unwholesome activities of hoodlums in the area appealed to the governor to effect the presence of security personnel as the project was still on going.
According to Madume Amadi, a resident of Ogbun-nu-Abali, some of the hoodlums are not happy over the development.
“They (hoodlums) are annoyed because some of them that we know say so openly.
It could be recalled that the Rivers State governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike on Monday supervised the ongoing dredging and reclamation works at the Ogbun-nu-Abali/Nkpogu waterfront where he expressed satisfaction with the work done so far.
The governor who was accompanied by technical experts and the contractor handling the project examined the quality of work done so far.
Addressing journalists after the inspection visit, Special Adviser to the Rivers State governor on Special Projects, Mr Cyril Dum Wife said the project “is an iconic project that will promote the economy of the area”.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Lands to the governor, Mr Anugbum Onuoha said the state government is developing the new site in the overall public interest.
