The Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) yesterday appealed to state governments to host the 2016 school sports festival.
The President of the federation, Malam Ibrahim Muhammed, in an interview with newsmen in Lagos, decried the reluctance of states to host the prestigious festival.
Tidesports recalls that Nigerian great sportsmen like Mary Onyiali, Yusuf Ali and the Enzewa brothers were all discovered at the school sports festival.
“It’s so unfortunate that we have yet to find a state to host this year’s edition, we have written to Rivers and Delta Governments, yet nothing has changed.
“Usually, we hold this biennial competition in November but as it is now, we are not even sure of what will happen.
“But we are still hoping for a miracle and I believe something will come out of this.
“This is the competition that discovered the finest of sportsmen and women we have had in the history of this country, there is no genuine grassroots development without school sports.
“The children have been anticipating this and it’s so unfortunate that we are not showing enough concern for these young ones,’’ Muhammed said.
The competition was proposed to hold in Uyo, Akwa Ibom in November.
Tidesports reports that the 7th edition was held in Makurdi, Benue and Cross-River won.
