The Paramount Ruler
and the Apiti of Rumueme in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, His Majesty, Eze O.N. Nsirim, has called on traditional rulers in the state to protect the traditions and customs of their various communities.
The monarch made the call while coronating two chiefs from Rukani, Chief Samuel Amaehule and Chief Highland Chinedu Amadi Orgu of Owhonda families in Rumueme at his palace in Rumueme, on Saturday.
Chief Nsirim averred that the traditions and customs bequeathed to the society were in near extinction as a result of political encroachment into the traditional institutions of communities.
The Nyewe-ali Rumueme urged the newly coronated chiefs in the kingdom to shun partisan politics, adding that their involvement in politics would erode the confidence reposed on them by their people.
He advised them to be upright, honest and truthful while discharging the responsibilities entrusted on them by their people and warned that he would not fail to approve their dethronement if they jettison their traditional roles and dabble into politics.
“Politicians want to wipe away our customs and traditions. We must resist them. You must not encourage things that would breed community crisis, don’t scatter your people but justify the confidence they have placed upon you people”, he stated.
Also speaking, the Nyewe-Ali Rumueme, His Royal Highness Barry Owabie commended the state Governor, Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike for the revolution he has brought to bear in the traditional institutions in the state by correcting the injustices of the past administration in the state.
He advised the chiefs to abide by the dictates of their traditional institutions and assured them of the support and cooperation of the Rumueme Council of Chiefs.
In his remarks, Chairman, Rumueme Kingdom of Traditional Councils, Chief Harry A. Nyeche said the people of the areas have a rich cultural heritage inspite of daunting socio-cultural challenges.
In their separate speeches, the newly coronated chiefs, Samuel Amaehule and Highland Chinedu-Amadike Orgu assured that they would enthrone good leadership in their various communities, adding that the confidence reposed on them by their people would not be betrayed.
