The President of Gokana
Youth Council, Barisi Kabee, has said that the construction of Bodo Road by the Rivers State Government will boost economic activities in the LGA.
Kabee, who stated this while speaking to newsmen recently in Bodo said when completed, the people of the area would have access to transport their goods to the urban centres.
The youth council President also commended Governor Wike for remembering them by constructing the Kpobie-Bodo Road.
“The Youths of Gokana are very happy because this road is very vital in the economic activity of Gokana, because it connects every other community in the LGA,” he said.
According to him, the road when completed would go a long way in boosting transportation of goods and services.
He said it would also stimulate economic growth and activity, even as he said the project will check, once and for all sections of Bodo where flooding had been persistent.
“In Bodo, there is a place known as station bus stop that is constantly flooded, so with this development, the governor has actually come to our rescue and we are happy,” he said.
Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the body, Comrade Dowel Badom, said the youths of the area will continue to support the governor in his efforts at delivering the dividends of democracy to indigenes of the area in particular and Rivers people in general.
In a related development, Engineer Bateim Ogariawo has said that roads in the Niger Delta would last longer if government first considered the topography of the terrain by using the appropriate surfaces base to construction roads.
Ogariawo who spoke, as quest lecturer during the annual lecture/awards ceremony of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Port Harcourt, recently said asphalt as generally used for roads construction in the Niger Delta was not appropriate.
He canvassed for the use of concrete pavement and interlocking concrete pavement in roads construction as they were cheaper and last longer and good for water logged areas.
Also speaking, the Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Bethuel Harrison, urged engineers in the state to come up with ideas and programmes that would move the state forward.
He expressed government’s readiness to partner the NSE in the area of roads construction.
The annual lecture was titled “A pavement mix approach to sustainable road infrastructure in the Niger Delta”.
