Anambra Seeks Stiffer Penalty For Rapists
The Speaker, Anambra
State House of Assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu, has called for stiffer penalty for anyone found guilty of raping a girl-child.
Maduagwu who spoke in Awka at plenary session to mark International Day of the Girl-Child, advised mothers to shield the girl-child from any act capable of de-humanising her.
The speaker urged mothers and victims to report such incidences to security personnel once the abuse was committed.
Maduagwu said that the day was set aside to dwell on the importance of training the girl-child equally as the boy-child, noting that the girl-child has the same relevance as the boy-child.
She said that the quote which states that “when you train a woman, you train a nation”, simply implies that the importance of a girl-child could not be toyed with.
In a related development, the Assembly has passed a bill for a law to use banks and Point of Sale (POS) terminals to called government taxes, levies and sundry revenue for the state.
The motion was moved by Romanus Ugochukwu (APGA-Orumba North, and seconded by Obinnna Emenakayi (APGA-Anambra East).
