Partner RSG To Establish Family Courts Mrs Wike Tells FIDA
The Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, has called on women lawyers in the state to work with the state government to establish family courts to handle domestic violence cases and related issues.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to her office at the Government House, Port Harcourt yesterday by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Justice Nyesom-Wike also called on the women lawyers to work with the Rivers State Government towards the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act.
According to the Wife of the Rivers State Governor , the state needs a family court that will focus on tackling critical issues that will enhance the stability of families and protect the rights of vulnerable members of the society.
She said: “FIDA should work towards the right implementation of the Child Rights Act already domesticated by the State Government.”
Justice Nyesom-Wike informed that the process of building a safe house in Rivers State for victims of abuses and violence to recuperate and find ways to rebuild their lives has started. She charged the Women Lawyers in Rivers State to continue to render free legal services to less privileged women, noting that it should take steps to discourage members collecting payment for charity services.
While assuring FIDA of her continued support, she advised the association to set up a trust fund to generate resources to support her charity services to the less privileged members of the community.
Earlier, the Chairperson of FIDA, Rivers State, Mrs Anthonia Osademe commended Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike for promoting the welfare of women and children.
She called on the Wife of the Rivers State Governor said the RivEthics radio programme initiated by Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike has helped in the Re-orientation of the youths in the state.
Highpoint of the occasion was the presentation of a plaque of recognition to Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. The award was received on behalf of the governor by his wife.
