The former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has grabbed headlines again following her appearance on Aljazeera show, The Stream, where she spoke on Nigeria’s corruption challenges.
The former finance minister, who appeared on the show, Monday night, at several points in her speech, proffered solutions to Nigeria’s corruption problems.
The former World Bank top notcher, who regretted that the economic gains recorded in Africa started eroding a few years ago, expressed hopes that Nigeria would recover from its current economic challenges.
Okonjo-Iweala said changes like switching to an electronic platform for money transfers are more effective than going after corrupt individuals.
She also called for the fight against corruption to be extended beyond individuals to institutions.
However, it appears that not all Nigerians are pleased with the former finance minister following the alleged financial recklessness that characterised the former administration under which she served.
Her appearance on the Aljazeera show has generated a debate on social media as some Nigerians praised her for her comments while others attacked her for not raising her voice when some members of the Goodluck Jonathan administration were busy looting the nation’s treasury.
Meanwhile, Chairman of President Muhammadu Buhari’s transition committee, Ahmed Joda, has said that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, may never be found guilty of corruption.
He said that while Okonjo-Iweala knew of the shady activities going on, she always sought the approval of Goodluck Jonathan, the former President, thereby protecting herself from prosecution.
