NMA Prepares For Flooding

sociation, Rivers State branch, has urged the public to take the 2016 flood prediction by NIMET seriously, so as to avoid the experience of the 2012 flooding that caught many people unawares.
Speaking during the inauguration of a Disaster, Emergency and Risk Management Committee, the NMA Chairman, Dr Datonye D. Alasia said the committee would help reduce the damage level that the impending flood would cause within the state.
Dr Alasia stressed the need for proactive steps to avert any major damage that might result from the flooding.
He also called on inter-agency collaboration to build a sustainable platform, that would plan, develop and oversee the utilisation of available resources.
The NMA boss urged the committee to be diligent in the discharge of its duties and also stressed the importance of teamwork.
The chairman of the Disaster, Emergency and Risk Management Committee, Dr Sotonye Ogan pledged the committee’s readiness to deliver on its mandates.
“Although we cannot prevent some disasters from occurring , we can proffer solution and medical attention to the society to lessen the impact”, he added.
Dr Ogan thanked the association for the confidence reposed in them.
Also speaking a representative of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mr Fortunatus Anyanwu called on the public not to discard the NIMET’s prediction, adding that there should be campaign to create awareness in the state.
He pointed out that some states such as Benue, Kano and Gombe had started experiencing flooding, saying that something should be done urgently to avert unpleasant situations.
