The Acting Vice Chancel
lor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, in Rivers State, Prof Joseph Kinanee, has called for more staff to be recruited so as to meet the existing staffing challenges facing the institution.
Kinanee, who said this when members of the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Education visited the university as part of its oversight function, appealed to the lawmakers to help make the recruitment possible.
According to him, “this will enable us to fill the vacancies existing in need areas; there are some departments where we do not even have professors”, he lamented.
He pointed out that with his emergence as acting vice chancellor of the institution, about 21 courses had been given full accreditation, noting that the school could run a post graduate programme.
Kinanee, however, decried the high level of insecurity in the school, adding that, “we have been having series of kidnaps, we reported this to the Commissioner of Police to ensure there is security, he deployed some teams to the school, and for about 6 months now, we have not had any case of kidnap”.
He requested that such facilities as hostels, and classrooms be upgraded to make students learn comfortably, noting that the funds realised from payment of tuition fees alone were not sufficient to take care of the deficit infrastructure.
“The school spends close to one million naira monthly on security, we pay police to maintain their presence here and on the other campuses” he said
He lamented that most of his staff had not been paid because they were denied capture by those conducting the Rivers State Civil Service Biometric exercise, and called on the lawmakers to assist the school in ensuring the release of the budgetary allocations.
Earlier, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon Martins Amaewhule, who led the committee on the oversight function to the school, said they were there not to witch hunt anybody but to see how they would be of help to the institution to enable it excel.
“We have come to see your challenges so that in the preparation of the next budget, we will be properly informed of what we are doing”, he said.
