Group Tasks FG On Sustainable Dev
A Non-governmental
Organisation, United Nation International in Nigeria has called on Federal Government to meet the demands of its people through far-reaching policies and programmes to achieve sustainable peace and progress in the country.
The President of the Group Amb. Per Stafsen made the call, Wednesday, on the occasion of the United Nations International Day of Peace held in Port Harcourt.
According to him, no nation can achieve sustainable peace and development, if government fails to make the people the centre stage of its governance.
He called on both government and the private sector to build a block for peace by ensuring sustainable development goals for the people.
Insisting that peace in Nigeria was under serious threat, Stafsen urged governments at all levels to tackle the prevailing inequality, injustice and extreme poverty saying that peace cannot be achieved in the atmosphere of injustice and poverty.
Also speaking, the spokesman of the group, Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke said the observance of the United Nations International Day of Peace with theme, “The Sustainable Development Goals, Building Blocks For Peace” was meant to raise public awareness about peace day celebration all over the world.
He said the Association was founded to promote the United Nations global mandate in the maintenance of World peace.
Nkweke expressed the need to embrace peace, especially in Nigeria, saying that Peace is the only atmosphere for developmental strides.
He called on Federal Government to toe the line of peace by sincerely dialoguing with the various agitators in the Community to profer solutions for sustainable peace in the country.
The Group Spokesman also called on various agitators in the country, including the Niger Delta Avengers, to embrace peace while the Federal Governments is committed to address the issue of injustice and inequality in the country.
He commended the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for his pragmantic effort at promoting peace in Rivers State.
According to him, efforts by the Government in the area of fighting crime and granting amnesty to repentant criminals are a welcome development to ensure peace in the state.
