Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Barr. (Mrs) I. Aguma has said efforts are being made to domesticate Violence Prohibitation Act in Rivers State.
The Act seeks among other things to protect both male and female counterparts in the country from domestic violence in families and homes.
The FIDA Country Vice Chairperson, (Mrs) I. Aguma stated this while delievering a lecture on Violence and Adoption organised by the Lawyers and Family Fellowship of the First Baptist Church, Aggrey Road in Port Harcourt, over the weekend.
She averred that the Act was necessitated due to the increased violence in homes and families in the society adding that it was intended to promote a harmonious living relationship among families.
Barr Aguma averred that families were integral partners to the development of any society and the country at large.
“Without families, there will be no units, wards, local government area, state and the country. So we must ensure the protection of the families, knowing that when we are blaming the leaders of the our nation, “we are inclusive because if we get the families right, our nation will be right”, she stated.
She opined that poverty and personal career ambition among women was a major cause of violence in most families and urged the women to strive for self dependence and reliance rather than depending on their male counterparts.
“We have challenges, the laws are there but no institutions like isolation centres to take care of the situations when they occur. Most women don’t report violence matters because they don’t have economic values”.
