The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) has instituted awards aimed at promoting excellence and enhancing the image of the profession within and outside the country.

The awards are for the state branch with the highest publicity for the activities of NIS and the Selfless Leadership Award aimed at curbing corruption in surveying practice.

The President of NIS, Surv. Akinloye Oyegbola stated this yesterday in Port Harcourt during an interactive session with members of the state branch of the institution.

Oyegbola who was on a working visit to the state, said already a committee has been set up to work out the modalities and prizes for the awards.

At the interactive session which coincided with the monthly meeting of the state NIS, the President said the award for the state with the highest publicity for NIS, was aimed at addressing one of the peculiarities of the profession which does not advertise itself.

According to Oyegbola, the Selfless Leadership Award, is  in line with the anti-corruption crusade of the present Federal Government.

He said that corruption is the display of the animalistic survival instinct in man, noting that the Selfless Leadership Award will steer members out of corruption.

Earlier, the State Chairman of NIS, Surv. Joseph Wobo Amadi had briefed the national president on the activities of his executive which, he said included aggressive publicity of the institution’s activities, on-going work on the state NIS Secretariat and efforts to take effective possession of the land for surveyors estate in the state.

Amadi called on NIS members in the state to pay their annual dues and levies to facilitate funding of on-going projects, assuring that the Secretariat would be made functional before the end of the year.

The President was accompanied on the visit by the NIS Secretary-General, Surv. Eugene Udechi and the National Publicity Secretary, Surv. Andy Nwikinane.

In an interview with The Tide, the State Publicity Secretary of NIS, Mr. Godwill T. Pepple said the state was determined, to win both the award for State with highest publicity for NIS and the Selfless Leadership Award.
