RVHA Lauds RSG For Redesigning PH City

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commended the vision of the state government in restoring the state capital to its original status as the Garden City and destroying various camps of criminals and kidnappers.
The Rivers State House of Assembly Chairman, House Committee on Housing, Land and Urban Development, Hon. Deeyah Barinene, who made the commendation when the committee embarked on its oversight functions to the Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning, urged the government and the ministry to speedily utilize the land confiscated from the criminals so that they do not go back and put back new structures.
Barinene commended the commissioner for working according to the law, warning that the Assembly had since passed the bill and the state governor has signed which authorized the government to destroy and confiscate property owned by kidnappers.
The House Committee chairman advised the ministry to always notify the owners of shanties and temporary structures in the state with enough notice before demolition, stressing that it will give them adequate time to park their properties.
The committee expressed satisfaction with the work so far done, and urged the people of the state to key in to the vision of the present administration explaining that the city of Port Harcourt is strategically plan
According to him, ‘’The Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning is empowered by law to approve all building plans in the state. We are also empowered by the law to also demolish any building that contravenes the building code and those that did not obtain building approval’’.
The commissioner noted that the essence of the building approval is to ensure that the builder those not only build on the right of way but to ensure that the building does not distort the city plan.
The commissioner took the House committee to Rumuwoji (Mile 1) Market, Mile 3 Market, Eagle Island, Igbu-Oshimini and Garrison Junction.
Members of the committee includes, Hon Deeyah Barinene, Deputy Speaker, Hon Marshall Stanley Uwom and Hon Victor Ihunwo.
