RSG To Transform Basic Education …Inaugurates UBE Board
As a way of providing quality education to the citizenry, the Rivers State Government has hinted of plans to transform basic primary education in the state.
The state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike gave the hint at the weekend while swearing-in members of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board at Government House, Port Harcourt.
He said: “For me, education is key. Look at our primary schools, they have degenerated. That is why I refused to appoint a politician to head RSUBEB. I have appointed a man with integrity to provide dedicated service to revive our basic education.
“This board will help to improve education at the foundation”, Wike stated.
Part of the plan, he noted, is that the state government will work towards paying its counterpart fund of N2.8billion in order to access the N2.8 billion meant for the state for 2014 to 2016.
He said the RSUBEB will be empowered to renovate primary and junior secondary schools, revive school libraries, provide desks, books and also rehabilitate school offices.
According to him: “In any school, you make sure that you take pictures of the condition of the schools before you start work. Don’t build new schools. What you have to do is to rehabilitate existing schools to improve the quality of basic education in the state”.
He urged the RSUBEB to liaise with the authorities at the Rivers State Ministry of Education to develop basic education in the state.
Responding on behalf of members of the board, Venerable Fyneface Akah said: “We are intently resolved to serve Almighty God in this realm of our Rivers people.
“The governor’s decision to involve us in the onerous task of driving basic education of your administration is understood and taken as a credible stewardship, and will be pursued with the tenacity of purpose”.
